Between the 10th and 12th September, 1914, the Germans, having been halted in their stride at the Battle of the Marne and desperate not to be cut off, retreated to the River Aisne where the natural defences were very strong. The British and the French Armies followed in pursuit. On 12th September 4th Middlesex of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division, marched 13 miles to Braisne in very wet conditions but the circumstances that resulted in William Case being killed in action are not known but it is likely that it was the result of shell fire. |
